Un duo electro-pop, con quel sapore 80s che non lascia scampo tanto è catchy. Una band di base a Londra ma che affonda le proprie origini fin nel mar dei Caraibi. Due musicisti che si fanno corteggiare dai grandi marchi della moda (Dolce & Gabbana si sono dichiarati loro fan) ma che hackerano, da buoni figli del ventunesimo secolo, il launch pad di una celebre marca di device per musica elettronica. Un lui e una lei, pieni di contraddizioni a partire dal nome, Avec Sans – Con e Senza. Ho avuto modo di parlarci alle soglie del loro primo tour italiano, prima che l’intero airplay nazionale sia invaso dalla voce di Alice Foxx e dagli arpeggiatori di Jack St. James.

ilcARTEllo: stando alla vostra pagina Facebook provenite “rispettivamente da Manchester e Trinidad”. Qual’è il vostro legame con l’isola caraibica?
Jack: Io vengo effettivamente da Trinidad: la mia famiglia vi ha vissuto sin dalla prima colonizzazione ed è dove la maggior parte dei miei familiari vive tutt’ora. Si gode di un’ottima qualità della vita laggiù.
ilcARTEllo: Avete iniziato ad esibirvi dal vivo nel 2013 ed è davvero impressionante come il vostro live show si sia sviluppato in così poco tempo ed essere così potente, energico ed accattivante. Inoltre godete di un’ottima visibilità e avete attirato una grande attenzione da parte dei media: qualche credi sia la ragione principale del successo degli Avec Sans?
Alice: Abbiamo speso molto tempo a lavorare sul progetto prima di caricare qualcosa online e credo che che la gente presti più attenzione se la prima traccia che fai uscire è ben lavorata e strutturata. Abbiamo raggiunto il top di The Hype Machine dopo solo due settimane e un sacco di major labels ci hanno contattato immediatamente. Credo quindi sia un fatto di prendersi il giusto tempo per lavorare e sviluppare in privato per poi uscire ad armi spiegate.
ilcARTEllo: come avete iniziato?
A: Siamo finiti con alcuni amici comuni a vedere un paio di concerti inisieme; poi, quando la mia precedente band è arrivata al suo scioglimento, qualcuno ci ha suggerito di lavorare assieme ed aveva i suoi motivi per farlo: ci siamo trovati incredibilmente bene, siamo migliori amici e l’unica cosa su cui possiamo discutere è quanto riverbero mettere su di una traccia.
ilcARTEllo: Suoanavate in altre band o avevate altri progetti musicali?
A: Suoniamo entrambi da quando siamo teenagers, ma questa è il primo vero e serio impegno musicale.
ilcARTEllo: Siete protagonisti dei video tutorials di Novation – celebre marchio di controller digitali – su come programmare un launch-pad o su come ottenere un vero light-show attraverso i bottoni del pad stesso. Com’è iniziata questa collaborazione?
J: Tutto è iniziato proprio quando nasceva la band. Stavo pensando a come ci saremmo esibiti dal vivo e avevo una lunghissima lista di cose che avrei voluto includere nella nostra performance ma che non puoi fare senza un enorme budget a disposizione. Fortunatamente ho trovato il Novation Launchpad e, dopo essermi documentato a lungo, ho realizzato che c’era una via piuttosto semplice per hackerarlo non solo per farlo essere lo strumento che desideravo, ma anche per ottenere un light show davvero figo allo stesso tempo! Quindi me ne sono comprato uno, ho fatto un piccolo video-demo e l’ho inviato alla Novation: lo hanno apprezzato davvero e sono stati da subito incredibilmente di aiuto e supporto. E’ bello vedere un marchio così importante essere genuinamente entusiasta per ciò che produce e per la creatività delle persone che usano i suoi prodotti.
ilcARTEllo: Come ho detto, la vostra performance live è davvero sorprendente e prevede soltanto voi due sul palco. Avete mai pensato ad avere una backing band per i vostri show?
A: E’ buffo che tu ce lo chieda, perchè proprio per il nostro ultimo show abbiamo avuto il piacere di suonare con Gary Tough, amico e batterista di professione. Ci piacerebbe avere più persone sul palco con noi, ma quando abbiamo concepito il nostro live set volevamo mantenerlo il più trasposrtabile possibile al fine di viaggiare quanto più potevamo. Per come è costruito adesso lo show, il sound risulta pieno ed è anche visivamente interessante e possiamo portare tutto ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno in poche custodie. Ma quando inizieremo a suonare su grandi palchi sarà bellissimo avere almeno un batterista con noi sul palco.
ilcARTEllo: Eccezione fatta per i vostri djset a Milano e la vostra apparizione al Lottarox Summer Festival, questa la vostra prima tourneè nel nostro paese. Eccitati?
A: Gli italiani sono adorabili e hanno le barbe più belle che si siano mai viste in tutto il mondo. Siamo stati in Italia cinque volte quest’anno e abbiamo finito per andarci pure in vacanza, dato che ce ne siamo innamorati follemente. Siamo davvero eccitati all’idea di avere una serie di concerti per poter vedere di più della vostra nazione, mangiare il miglio cibo mai assaggiato e vedere ancora qualche barba incredibile.
ilcARTEllo: According to your Facebook page you “hail from Manchester and Trinidad respectively”. What is your connection with the Carribean Island?
Jack: I am actually from Trinidad. My family has been living there since it’s first colonisation and it’s where most of my family currently live. It’s such a beautiful lifestyle they have back there.
ilcARTEllo: You started to play live in 2013, and it’s really impressive how your live show got to be so powerful, energetic and engaging in such a short time. You even gained great visibility and media attention too: what do you think is the main reason of Avec Sans’ success?
Alice: We spent a lot of time working on the project before we put a track online and I think people really sit up and pay attention when the first track you put out is a fully formed thing. We had hit the top of the Hype Machine in the first couple of weeks and had a lot of major labels contacting immediately. So I guess it’s all about taking time to develop in private and then to go out all guns blazing.
ilcARTEllo: How did it start?
A: We ended up at a quite a few shows together through mutual friends, so when my previous band came to a natural conclusion, someone else suggested we work together and it made total sense. We get on incredibly well; we’re best friends and only ever argue about things like how much reverb is on a track.
ilcARTEllo: Did you have any other bands or musical projects before?
A: We’ve both been in bands since we were teenagers, but this is the first time it’s been a really serious endeavour.
You been featured by Novation on video tutorials about how to program your launch-pad or how to have a light design on launch-pad buttons. How did this collaboration begin?
J: It began right at the start of the band really. When we were thinking about how we were going to perform live I had a very long list of things I wanted from our performance which you normally can’t do without a massive budget. Fortunately I found the Novation Launchpad online and after a lot of reading realised that there is probably quite an easy way to hack it in order for it to not only be any instrument I want, but also be a really cool light show at the same time! So I bought one, made a little demo video and sent it to Novation. They really liked what I was doing and have been so incredibly supportive ever since. It’s wonderful to see a business so genuinely excited about what they do and so passionate about the creativity of people who use their products.
As I said, your live performance is astonishing, and it’s just the two of you on stage. Have you ever thought about having a backing band for your shows?
A: Funny you should ask, for our last show we got a professional drummer friend Gary Tough on stage with us. We’d love to have more people playing with us live, but when we were designing our live show, we wanted to keep it as portable as possible as we want to travel as much as we can. The way we’ve set it up, the sound is full, it’s visually interesting and we can take everything we need in a few suitcases. But when we start playing bigger stages we’d love to have at least a drummer on stage as well.
Apart from your djstes in Milan and your appearance at Lottarox Summer Festival, this is going to be your first italian tour. Excited?
A: Italians are so lovely and they have the very best beards we’ve ever seen in the world. We’ve been over to Italy about five times this year and ended up going once for a holiday as well as we fell in love with it so much. We’re really excited to have a string of dates together and to see some more of the country, eat more of the best food we’ve ever tasted and see some more brilliant beards.
